Feed Yourself

The Bible is food for the soul.  It is necessary for growing like Christ.  Without it, the follower of Christ can not become mature.  It is through the Bible that the follower of Christ gets to know God; who He is, what He’s like, what He has done, what He can do and what He plans to do in the future, His power, His compassion, mercy, grace and humility, etc.  Scripture tells the follower of Christ to grow in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10) and to seek the knowledge of God as if it was precious metal or hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:1-5).   The knowledge of God is necessary for growing in godliness (2Peter 1:1-11).

Feed yourself daily.  Like food, there will be times when you devour it with great enthusiasm and delight (Jeremiah 15::16; Psalm 119:103).  There will be other times when it might seem dry and boring, like an over done steak.  That will have a lot to do with what you are reading, how you are feeling, what it happening in your life and where you are in your fellowship with God.  Yet, even in the dry times, God will use it to provide the spiritual nourishment you need if you let Him.  And, it’s calorie free, so enjoy to your hearts content.

Which Translation

The following is a non-exhaustive list of websites that provide plans for reading through the Bible.  They are not listed in any particular order.  Most sites provide a number of different translations to choose from.  If you don’t like to read or simply want variety, some of them are available audibly straight from the site.

Having translation choices brings the natural question from people newer to the Bible: Which translation should I use?  The Bible was written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic.  Unless you are proficient in those languages, you must use a translation.  Because languages don not full transliterate word for word, all translations are a combination of word for word and concept for concept.  In general, your best translations for study will have greater emphasis on word for word.  Your easier reading translations will place greater emphasis on concept for concept.
